First, how many people are using hot water in the home? Some people want to “go big” with their water heater so that they never run out of hot water. But if you have two people in the home and you have a 50 gal water heater, you are just wasting money keeping that water warm.
Second, consider what you are heating the water with. Are you using electric, natural gas, propane (LP)? That is important to know. A lot of people use electric, but electric can be expensive – especially if your water tank is too big. Consider using propane if you don’t have access to natural gas.
Also, consider convenience as well. If you really don’t want to run out of hot water, consider getting a tankless water heater. The electric ones are not so great, but the propane and natural gas ones are pretty fantastic nowadays.
