Your basement is a very different place in your home compared to other areas. Since it is either completely or partially underground, your basement needs to deal with some unique circumstances. One common problem in basements, especially when a home is located in a low spot, is that of groundwater seeping in.

Water can do a lot of damage in your basement, and if the ground water level is high, quite a bit of water can make it into your basement.

The solution for this problem is to install a sump pump. A sump pump sits in a trench at the lowest point of your basement and will pump out any water that seeps in, to the outside, away from your home.

If you have a sump pump, it is important to make sure that it functions properly. You can easily test its functionality by pouring some water into the trench and seeing if the sump pump turns on. A common problem that can stop it from working is that the float that turns on the sump pump gets stuck if it hasn’t been used in a while. Fortunately, this is very easy for you to fix by detaching the float from whatever it is stuck to. You should also make sure that the pipes the pump drains through are not clogged.
