Whenever a large storm hits, many homeowners have to deal with repairs and remediation, but one part of your home that sometimes gets damaged but goes unnoticed is your plumbing.

Inside and outside fixtures that were submerged could have sediment or start growing mold. They should be taken apart and cleaned out with bleach, or replaced.

Another common issue is that drains get clogged by sediment from the flooding. If your drains were underwater for a period of time, it might be worth having your pipes cleaned out before you go back to normal usage. If this isn’t dealt with you could end up with some serious clogs.

There is even a risk of some serious damage to underground pipes caused by the weight of the water and the saturated dirt surrounding them. Of course, there isn’t really much you as a homeowner can do to prevent this, but if there has been heavy flooding in the area where you live, getting your plumbing checked out by a professional can save you from many headaches later on.
