There are a few things that could make your P-trap fail.
If there are P-traps that are used infrequently, it is possible that the water sealing it shut and holding sewer gases at bay will evaporate. To prevent this, you can install a tap primer which will add water to the P-trap when it is running low.
There is also a risk that you could overload a P-trap that has many appliances hooked up to it. If you have a dishwasher, this most likely drains through the same P-trap as your kitchen sink. You should avoid adding more than 2 appliances to the same P-trap.
If your P-trap isn’t properly ventilated, this can make your sink drain slowly. It might cause sewer gas to be released through other drains in the home. You will be able to hear this happening when there are noises coming from those drains when you are using an improperly vented drain.
