We all like to save time by throwing the dishes into the dishwasher after having guests over, but there are some items that it is better to keep out of the dishwasher. Of course, it is helpful when the manufacturer includes a label to let you know whether or not an item is dishwasher safe, but these are not always there. Here is a list of some items that you might not realize should be washed by hand.

Antique or heirloom items.

Most likely this is not something that you would do, but we figured it would be worth it to include these on the list. Needless to say, a dishwasher is rougher on the items being cleaned than you would be when hand-washing them. A good rule of thumb is, that if you would not be scrubbing them too hard when you are washing them in the sink, you probably shouldn’t let the dishwasher take over.

Cast iron cookware

You probably already know that you don’t want to use dish detergent when cleaning these, so that means that a dishwasher is out of the question. And don’t try to wash it by itself without adding the dishwasher detergent either. Besides the waste of energy and water this would prove to be, the high heat of the water could also damage your cast iron pans.

Wooden utensils and cutting boards

These items can crack, splinter, or warp from heat and water exposure.

Travel mugs that are insulated

Running these through your dishwasher can damage the seals and cause the insulation to stop working.

These were just a few items, but using your good judgment and erring on the side of safety, you should be able to benefit from using a dishwasher without ruining sensitive kitchen utensils.
