Most of us have a plunger sitting somewhere in our home. It is a simple and effective tool, but there is a correct way to use it.

First, you don’t want to start plunging right away when it looks like your toilet is about to overflow. Instead you should wait a few minutes with the water supply turned off to let the water recede. If it does not seep out on its own, it might be best to remove some of the water to make sure that it doesn’t overflow from the pressure when you’re plunging. On the other hand, if the water level is below half, you should add some more water, since this can make it more efficient when plunging.

The cup of the plunger should be completely covered with water, and create a seal over the drain, and then you need to push and pull for about half a minute without breaking this seal.

It’s important to note that there are plungers that are specifically designed for use in toilets, such as an accordion plunger.

If you have used any type of chemicals to break up the clog, do not try to plunge it afterward, since this could cause the chemical to splash on you.
