How Hot Is Too Hot?

Is there such a thing as a shower that is too hot? Even though some of us might feel like there isn’t, there is a possibility that a malfunctioning part leads to water that is so hot it could hurt you. If you find that no matter how much you adjust the handle, the water stays scalding hot, then you will need to do something about it.

The first thing to check is to make sure that no valves have been closed by mistake. If you have a cold water shutoff valve for your shower alone, then you should check that. If the problem with hot water is affecting other faucets in your home, then there might be a main valve that is shut off.

The problem could also be the pressure balancing valve for your shower. This valve regulates water pressure, but also the ratio between the hot and cold water coming through the pipe. If mineral buildup has caused this to stop working well or even fail completely, it will need to be replaced. It is important to make sure to replace the existing valve cartridge with one that fits perfectly.
