While your gutters usually are outside of our area of expertise, they can be a major contributor to water damage in a home. One way of preventing this is to properly maintain your gutter. Doing so can significantly extend your gutter’s lifespan. Gutter maintenance is one of the most taken-for-granted home maintenance projects. Here are some ways to keep your gutter in good condition.

Cleaning your gutters – Gutters need to be cleaned out 2-3 times a year to keep the water flowing freely. It also has the added benefit of preventing the exterior surface from getting stained.

Gutter Tune-up – Your gutters also need a tune-up every few years such as re-sealing corners, re-pitching gutters, reattaching loose downspouts, and re-securing fasteners.

Splash Blocks – Make sure your splash blocks are perfectly angled. This is important so that the water will flow away from the foundation of the house. Avoid slipping hazards by pointing them away from any walkways or driveways.

Always check for a clogged gutter – Check for any ground erosion below the gutter line. Check any overflows or discoloration, leaky corners, and restricted flow of water.

If you notice any rusts on your gutter, it only means that your gutters have reached the end of their lifespan. A replacement is needed immediately.

If you’re able to keep on top of all of these items, your gutter should last for a very long time.
