Everything wears out with time. Even the toilet seat that might appear fairly solid is subject to wear and tear… or it could just be that you would like to replace it with a modern alternative. Either way, it is important that you measure out the location of your toilet well to make sure that you install your new seat in such a way that it too will last a long time. It will also make a difference if you have limited space around your toilet. You don’t go to install your new seat only to find that it doesn’t fit right.

The nice thing about toilets is that you don’t have too many variables to deal with. Usually, your main concerns will be the rough-in measurement, the toilet depth, and the tank height.

The rough-in measurement can be found by measuring the distance from the wall to the bolts that hold your toilet in place. The toilet depth can be measured from the front edge of your toilet seat to the back of the tank. The Tank height is from the floor to the top of the toilet tank.

With these measurements, you will be able to pick up a new toilet at a store. You can also see if there is some extra room, allowing you to change the style of toilet you have.
