Here in Florida, winters don’t get very cold, but every now and then, a cold snap will catch us unawares. Whenever there is weather below freezing, it will only take a few hours before your pipes freeze, especially since the water in the pipes already is much colder than it is during the summer. When pipes freeze, they can burst and cause serious damage to your home.

There are a few things that you should do whenever you are aware of an upcoming drop in temperature.

Leave cabinets under sinks open so that warm air can enter freely.

Keep a couple of faucets running slowly during the time the temperature drops to keep the water in the pipes moving.

If you have areas of your home that get colder where there are pipes located, such as your basement or crawl spaces, try to redirect warmer air to those areas.

If the worst does happen and a pipe bursts, most insurance companies will pay for damages, but you will need to prove that you did what you could to prevent damage.
